When I Apply for My First Developer Job

We are living in 21st century and in this modernized century, with the advancement in technology we have shifted towards internet for all our needs. May it be doing shopping, or it is paying our bills; may it be educating children online, or doing business; everything has just shifted to online mode. Everyone find it easy to access things online, sitting at one’s own place only. So with the advancement in technology, we have entered into the era of WWW internet services.

Generally, as a common man, we enjoy the facilities that are provided to us. We rarely think of how the things have been done the way they are working for us. We enjoy accessing different websites and applications on our android phones or computer systems. But we never give it a thought, that how the things are designed that way for us.

These all things are done using web applications by web developers.

But the question arises what is web applications and who are web developers and how one can be a web developer and etc. etc.

Web development is the work involved in developing a Web site for the Internet (World Wide Web) or an intranet (a private network).[1] A more comprehensive list of tasks to which Web development commonly refers, may include Web engineering, Web design, Web content development, client liaison, client-side/server-side scripting, Web server and network security configuration, and e-commerce development.

Web development can range from developing a simple single static page of plain text to complex web applications, electronic businesses, and social network services.

Among Web professionals, “Web development” usually refers to the main non-design aspects of building Web sites: writing markup and coding.[2] Web development may use content management systems (CMS) to make content changes easier and available with basic technical skills.

For larger organizations and businesses, Web development teams can consist of hundreds of people (Web developers) while developing Web sites. Smaller organizations may only require a single permanent or contracting developer, or secondary assignment to related job positions such as a graphic designer or information systems technician.

Now the question is what is the job of a web developer? What job he/she does? How one can become a web developer?

A web developer is a programmer who specializes in, or is specifically engaged in, the development of World Wide Web applications using a client–server model. The applications typically use HTML, CSS and JavaScript in the client, PHP, ASP.NET (C#), Python, Node.js, Go or Java in the server, and http for communications between client and server.

Now the most important question that we will discuss here will be:

5 Important Things I Wish I Knew, When I Apply for My First Developer Job:

In the recent times, when web development field is witnessing commendable progress every day and night, the job opportunities for the job of web developer has also increased manifolds; in past few years. Due to increase in no. of opportunities for web developers, the competition has also increased much for the job in the field of web development. The situation has come where the no. of appearance has become much more than the no. of vacancies available in this field. In such case, a search for the best comes on the floor. Hence, one needs to understand that one with the best knowledge and talent will be the one to get the better job than others.

If this is the case of a fresher, then it becomes more important to acknowledge the pointers that can ensure a good starting in the field of web development.

Following are the 5 important things I wish I knew when I apply for my first developer job:-

1. You know nothing:-

‘You know nothing’, is the first most things to keep in mind, when you apply for your first developer job. It should be kept in mind priory while going for your first job that the technological industry is so vast that what you think you know is just a drop of water of the whole ocean. This is important for one to remember that we are all building upon over a century of inventions, discoveries, research, and development. If in this case, we are overconfident on ourselves that what we know is much and feel our pride in knowing the same then we surely are not ready to enter in the field of web development. One may be better than many people but one also needs to understand that much more than those no. of people are those who are better than him/her. If one is able to accept that is he/she just knows more or less nothing then the chances to learn new and better with chances to get the better opportunity increases manifolds. So the foremost thing to remember while going for a web developer job is that you know nothing.

2. Your first job will not be your ultimate job:-

When one goes for a new job, especially when it is first job, then the person becomes much possessive regarding his/her job. But one should keep in mind that this is what the starting is only about him/her. He/She should keep in mind that they are just applying for the very first job which implies that this is their first step in professional life. Web development is a very big and extended field where there are a variety of people who have enormous no. of multiple skills. In between all those wonderful multi-taskers, if you didn’t get the opportunity it is completely okay. There are thousands of people applying for the job in this field but the no. of jobs is still less in comparison with appearance. So it is good to accept priory that your first will not be your ultimate job.

3. Your potential with talent will let you have the job:-

The most part is that companies know what they want. Companies hire new grads and newcomers in the industry for their future potential. If you are applying for a developer position and you don’t have previous experience than you should be clear enough in digesting the fact that you’re not getting the job for your coding but you are getting the same to get yourself experienced. If you are applying first time for any job then you should know that no one can be hired with zero skills and zero projects at anyhow. You have to build stuff so you can show stuff.

The more your resume, portfolio, cover letter, and projects show that you are interested in becoming a developer, the more chances you have of getting hired as one. So, one need to understand that your talent and you potential will let you the job.

4. You should have the ability to learn new:

The next important thing to keep in mind before applying for the job in web development field is that you should have the ability to learn new things always. Web development is a well-designed and varied field. With this the range of this field is undefined and hence one cannot just know everything about web development. In such cases, if you have the ability to learn new, then only you would be able to make yourself a part of this field.

While dealing with new projects, you come across various new things and then can only be grasped when you have the ability to put your ego aside while working to learn new. So, yes one need to have the ability to learn new always.

5. Networking with people outside of your company is crucial for career development:-

The last and most important thing that one need to keep in mind when you are applying for your first job is that you need not to be restricted to your own company only . One has the need to build his/her network outside the company also. This will give you recognition and will develop your arena too. Make sure you follow up with the new contacts you make with a ‘hello’ and an email. You honestly never know where the next great opportunity will come from.

Also, the bigger your network, the more of these kinds of opportunities will come your way. Whether it’s collaboration, or a new job opportunity, these will come from the people you meet. So one has to extend his/her reach and build a strong network of you for greater opportunities.

These were 5 Important Things I Wish I Knew, When I Apply for My First Developer Job.

So more or less it is important for one to not to restrict oneself to his/her self-made boundaries and secondly, having a self-sufficient resume to represent yourself with well-furnished trainings is also must.
